Common reasons to refer

  • Raised PSA, family history of prostate cancer, or abnormal DRE - for assessment and discussion of MRI/biopsy.
  • Lower urinary tract symptoms in men - for review of medical and procedural options.
  • Microscopic or visible haematuria - for cystoscopic and upper-tract assessment.
  • Renal mass on imaging, or kidney stones requiring intervention or recurrent stone workup.
  • Adrenal mass - particularly if hormone-active, larger than 4 cm, or with concerning imaging features.
  • Recurrent UTIs in adults, especially men or post-menopausal women.
  • Testicular lumps, scrotal swellings, or unilateral varicocele.
  • Second opinion on a planned urological procedure.

What helps the consultation

Where available, please include with the referral:

  • Recent imaging reports (CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET) and where the images were performed.
  • Recent pathology - PSA, urine MCS, FBC and renal function for kidney problems.
  • Current medication list, particularly anticoagulants and blood pressure medications.
  • Previous urological or surgical history including any prior pathology reports.

After the consultation

A letter is sent to the referring GP after each consultation. Investigations and surgery, when needed, are arranged through the Sydney rooms; results and post-operative letters are likewise copied back to the GP.

For urgent advice on a suspected urological emergency (testicular torsion, obstructive pyelonephritis, suspected phaeochromocytoma, frank haematuria with clot retention), please phone the rooms directly.

Considering a urology opinion close to home?

Bowral consulting is for Southern Highlands patients who would prefer not to travel to Sydney for the first appointment.
