Second opinion

A second opinion is a normal part of specialist care. It is an independent review of your imaging, test results and treatment plan, and does not commit you to changing your treating team.

How to request one

You can ask for a second-opinion appointment at the Bowral rooms in any of the ways below:

What to bring

Letting the rooms know the following ahead of the appointment makes the review more useful:

  • A current GP or specialist referral (required for a Medicare rebate).
  • Recent imaging reports - CT, MRI, ultrasound or PET. Where possible, the images themselves on disc or via shared link.
  • Recent pathology results - PSA history, biopsy reports, urine and blood tests.
  • A list of current medications, particularly anticoagulants and blood pressure medications.
  • Any prior surgical or specialist letters relating to the problem.

What a second opinion covers

  • Review of the imaging and test results to date.
  • Confirmation - or revision - of the working diagnosis.
  • Discussion of the treatment options that fit your situation, including the option of active surveillance or no procedure where appropriate.
  • Discussion of the realistic risks, benefits and alternatives of any procedure being considered.
A second opinion does not commit you to anything. If, after review, continuing with your existing team is the right plan, that is also a good outcome.
